You know when you have a cold or flu because you recognise the symptoms: headaches, running nose, sneezes and a temperature. However when it comes to your gynaecological health do you know if you are healthy or not?
Women who use the Creighton Model FertilityCare System learn how to track their natural menstrual cycles and become familiar with their reproductive system. FertilityCare is, first and foremost, a daily healthcare system for all women!

A handful of my women friends suffer from polycystic ovarian disease. This is a very common condition where multiple eggs all try to develop and mature for ovulation but none may come to ovulate. Typical symptoms are often related to the woman’s appearance: excessive hair growth, weight gain, acne and darker patches on the face. Other less obvious signs include continuous discharge, abnormal bleeding, irregular menstrual cycles, severe pre-menstrual syndromes, food intolerances and sometimes even depression. Many such women sufferers do not know that the more visible signs on their face and body are all related to the more hidden signs and may only focus on addressing the issues with their appearance. Indeed all these symptoms together point to this condition in their ovaries. When I mentioned to one of these women that her continuous discharge throughout the month was abnormal she exclaimed “but I have always had this; I never thought it was unusual!” Most women I have met just don’t know what is supposed to be normal – we don’t get taught this material in school, and our mothers probably know no better either!

Another example – a client mentioned that in her teens she was so worried about the discharge that regularly occurred during the middle of her cycle that she went to her doctor in order to suppress it. And indeed the doctor prescribed her a “treatment”. But that discharge was a normal and healthy sign indicating that her body was preparing for ovulation! It is not unusual for a patient to be unaware of the normal signs of her cycle yet that doctor raises alarm bell, at least for me!
Very often the pill is prescribed to treat a whole host of gynaecological conditions. It provides symptomatic relief and may not necessarily address the underlying condition(s). So when these women come off the pill, say to try for a baby, they may still find it difficult to conceive or to maintain the pregnancy.
